Wangchen Norbu set himself ablaze in the evening of 19 November near the Kangtsa Gaden Choephel Ling Monastery raising slogans demanding the return of HH the Dalai Lama from exile, the release of the Eleventh Panchen Lama and freedom for Tibet. Wangchen reportedly passed away at the site of his protest.
Tibetans carried his charred body inside the monastery where a large number of monks and local people gathered to offer prayers and their profound respects until late in the night. His cremation began at 10:30 pm that evening.
Wangchen Norbu is the son of Khando Tso and the late Tenzin.
