Konchok Tenzin, a monk at Mokri Monastery, self-immolated on 26 March 2013 at a road junction near his monastery. Konchok died during his protest — apparently in opposition to China’s rule over Tibet — and his body was taken back to his monastery. According to sources, he was cremated the same night for fear of his remains being confiscated by the authorities.
Following the incident, a large contingent of Beijing’s security forces were deployed around the monastery and nearby villages and a strict crackdown was imposed. This is the seventh self-immolation protest in Luchu County to date, and all the protesters involved have died as a result.
Konchok Tenzin is survived by his parents — Lhakho and Lhamo Tso — and six brothers and sisters. Konchok was the youngest of his siblings. He joined the monastery when young to study the monastic ritual texts of Tibetan Tantric Buddhism. After finishing his monastic ritual studies, he had graduated studying Tibetan Buddhist philosophy and Tibetan literature, sources reported.
