Mother of a three-year-old, Chugtso, died after setting herself on fire in protest against Chinese rule on 16 April 2013 at around 3 pm (local time) near Jonang Monastery in Dzamthang County in Ngaba, Sichuna.
Shortly after the self-immolation, bystanders rushed Chugtso’s body to Jonang Monastery where the monks conducted prayer rituals for the deceased. Her body was later taken to her home in Barma Yultso village.
Local authorities then threatened to confiscate her body if her family didn’t cremate her immediately that same night. Hundreds of Tibetans from the local community gathered near the family home to participate in the cremation and honour her action.
Chugtso is survived by her husband and child as well as her parents, Tenkho and Dronkyi.
